This painting-print is a scene of an episode from the Puranas known as Sagara Manthana (churning of the ocean). It so happened that gods and demons both decided to get together in churning the ocean to obtain Amrita, the immortality bestowing elixir. However, soon after they commenced churning, scum emerged from the ocean in the form of a deadly poison which started spreading all over the universe.

Unable to withstand its fumes and heat, gods and demons rushed in Shiva's presence and beseeched him to contain the poison.
