Krishna Venugopala South Indian Woodcarving

Beautifully colored, intricate wood carving of Sri Krishna as Venugopala. Strikingly colored and very intricately carved, this is a remarkable woodcarving of Krishna Venugopala. The woodcarving is created in traditional Carnatic style of South India. Wood carvings created in this style are very ornately carved. This one depicts Krishna standing in his usual form that is bent at three points. He is seen four-armed. The upper two hands hold shankha (conch) and chakra (disc) and the lower hands are in the flute-playing pose.

Krishna is seen standing under an intricately carved tree, laden with fruit and buds. He is flanked by two maidens which could either be gopikas (the cowherd women who loved Krishna) or Sridevi and Bhudevi, the consorts of Vishnu who is non-different from Krishna. This is a very traditional wood art from South India.
