Bronze Idol of Ranganatha Vishnu of Srirangam

Ranganatha Vishnu is Vishnu's sleeping form, lying down on the enormous snake demigod Adishesha, the king of serpents. Lord Vishnu has many names, one of which is Ranganatha. Ranganatha is derived from the Sanskrit words Ranga, which is a name of Vishnu and Nath, which means €œmaster, € and thus Ranganatha is a composite name with two names combined.

This statue was created using the lost-wax method (Madhuchistavidhana). This statue depicts Lord Vishnu as Ranganatha. He is the most revered deity at Sri Ranganatha Swami Temple in Srirangam.

This statue shows Lord Ranganatha swami reclining on Adisesha, Vishnu's couch. Lord Vishnu's eyes are beautiful and he has a calming smile. He is shown as having two arms. His head is supported by one of his two hands, and the other hand is resting on his thigh. Sheshanaga, with his five hoods casts a shade on Vishnu.

On his head, a royal crown can be seen. A necklace is delicately carved around his neck, and a Yagnopavitam (sacred thread of the Hindus) can be seen obliquely around his torso. Vishnu's chest bears a triangle mark which represents Lakshmi residing eternally on his chest. The origin of this mark is explained in the Bhagavata Purana. His feet are supported by a lotus flower. This statue is supported by a pedestal with lotus flower petals carved into it.
