Gangotri is the origin of the holy Ganga River and an important part of the four dhams of the Chardham Yatra. It is located at an altitude of 3,100 meters. It is famous for the Gangotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is believed that this river fell downwards from heaven when King Bhagirath observed stringent penance to eliminate his forefather’s sins.
Remember, Gaumukh Glacier is about 19 km away from Gangotri. At Bhagirathi Shila, individuals take a bath in the river to purify themselves spiritually. The temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. It remains open from May to October.

As per the mythology, the Pandavas looked for Lord Shiva’s forgiveness after the Kurukshetra war. But he took the appearance of a bull and disappeared into the ground. The Kedarnath temple marks the area where his hump came up. People go on a 16 KM trip from Gaurikund to reach the temple. The whole area is surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks. It is believed that visiting Kedarnath lets people have Moksha.

Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is an important part of the Chardham Yatra. It is located at 3,133 meters above sea level in Uttarakhand. Adi Shankaracharya established it in the 8th century. The temple has a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in meditation pose. As per mythology, Lord Vishnu observed strong penance here. To protect him from unfavorable weather, the goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree. It gave the place its name- Badrinath.
People take a holy bath in Tapt Kund- a natural hot spring, offer prayers to the god, distribute prasad among devotees, and pray for everyone’s wellness. Badrinath is surrounded by the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges and the Alaknanda River.
